Overview

In this module we will look further into the pre-writing phase of a project and show you how to set up your document structure so that your purpose is clearly evident to your reader.

  • Once you know your purpose, you can plan your project and we give you the tools you need to structure a persuasive document.
  • We will introduce the subject of style and how use of styles can add consistency to your project as well as giving it a professional appearance. In particular we show you how to apply character, heading and paragraph styles to assist your composition.
  • We will discuss options for creating a storyboard and outlining your document using the options in Word and in PowerPoint as a way of overcoming writers block and assisting your creative processes.
  • Finally we show you some other important tools for ensuring your document has a professional finish. These tools include using headings to ensure proper navigation so that readers know where to find the information they are seeking, the importance of font choices and how fonts convey their own messages and finally we look at space as it affects your document layout.

All of the material will be related to your word processor (Word 2007) and how by using the controls provided you can do much of the work automatically—this will put us well on the road to writing productively.
