Module 10 Composing with style
Overview
So far in this course we have looked at good writing structure and emphasized the need for proper planning of the entire project. We have looked at the need to structure your work and you have been shown techniques for doing this.
- In this module the focus will be on the process of composition. We show you how documents are structured and how to design your introduction, the main body of your work as well as the conclusion or recommendations.
- In the earlier module we explained the concept of style as it affects your headings, paragraphs and text. In this module you will be taken through the concepts of writing style as it applies to informal, standard or informal writing. The concept of writing in plain, easy to read, English will be explained. Plain English will ensure the widest possible audience can read your document. In this regard, we explain the concept of your audience horizon.
- You will then be shown how you can introduce additional material to support your argument without detracting from the main flow of ideas. Such supporting material includes, text boxes, tables and chats, headers and footers, footnotes and endnotes as well as reference lists and biographies. This is all in the way of ‘helper’ material for your reader.
- Finally we look at the components of the revision, editing and proofreading process: consideration, cphesion, clarity and consistency and we show you how to test your document against standard writing benchmarks.
